Alacati - Windsurfer's Paradise
Alacati, a unique Mediterranean town on the Western coast of Turkey, which has been famous for its architecture, vineyards and windmills for over 150 years has now made its name in the world of windsurfing and kitesurfing, with its crystal clear water, consistent and steady wind (for an average of 300 days a year) and Turkish hospitality.
Turkey's Aegean shores are among the most fascinating and beautiful stretches in the country. The magnificent coastline, lapped by the clear water of the Aegean Sea, with landscapes of cultivated fields of aniseed, sesame and artichokes dotted with fig and gum trees, will guide you to discover Alacati bay on the Cesme peninsula -- one of the world's greatest windsurfing destinations.
With its 1.8 kms width, over 5 kms depth, crystal clear waters, azure blue skies, consistent and steady winds, topography and location, Alacati is an ideal windsurfing spot in Europe. Both the shape of the bay and the thermal water pressures create steady and consistent winds blowing side-shore from North to South (Poyraz) in summer and from South to North (Lodos) in winter months.
Alacati is blessed with a shallow area that extends to 500m from the beach. Combined with flat water this makes it the perfect place to improve technique and for slalom blasting. It also means that it is suitable for a whole range of abilities at the same time. It is an ideal place to learn to waterstart. The other side of the bay is 1.5km away and has several small beaches. The wind can often blow for a large part of the day with the strongest in the afternoon.
First time windsurfers love the place as the waist-deep and sand covered shallow water area extends from the shore into the bay creating perfect conditions for beginners of all ages. Easy recovery from falls adds a new dimension to both teaching and learning to windsurf.
Consistent steady winds, combined with the best equipment ready and all rigged up steps away from the water is also an opportunity for speed or wave lovers not to miss. The wind in Alacati is an accelerated Meltemi that is funneled through the hills. A local thermal effect caused by the dry hills heating up increases the strength some more. It has wind the whole year, with strongest and most reliable in summer. In summer, the North wind creates perfect conditions for flat-water high-speed windsurfing, whereas in winter the South wind creates waves steady enough even to please the big wave-funs.
The coastal plain enjoys an exceptionally mild climate, with soft, verdant springs, hot summers, sunny autumns and warm winters marked by occasional showers. For windsurfing and sun-bathing, summer months are ideal, but the Aegean also provides a perfect escape from the rigors of winter weather even in January and February with mild, sunny days.
Windsurfing holidays in Alacati, Turkey are becoming increasingly popular with windsurfers due to the reliable wind, good value and friendly people. Alacati (pronounced Alachati) is no exception, just an hour from Izmir airport in an old wine growing area. It is popular with local windsurfers as well, with the Turkish champion having his base here.
